Scottish Sports Association - Board and Director vacancies

Especially at this time, sport needs a strong and united presence. The Scottish Sports Association (SSA) is independent of government and works to represent and support Scottish Governing Bodies (SGBs) of sport. The governing bodies of sport are responsible for the governance, development and delivery of their individual sports and provide a formal structure for the 900,000 sports men and women who are members of one of Scotland’s 13,000 sports clubs. 

This vacancy is for up to two Directors (one as Vice Chairperson) and up to two co-opted Board members on the SSA Board.

Role: The SSA is looking to appoint up to four enthusiastic individuals to provide guidance to the Board of Management; 2 Directors and 2 co-opted Board members. Expressions of interest are especially sought from individuals with significant experience in the strategic leadership of Scottish Governing Bodies of sport. These roles are key to the progression of the SSA and sport in Scotland and will be integral to the Board of Management. 

The Opportunity: The successful individual(s) will gain expertise of supporting and advising a small but dynamic Board. As Directors/Board members they will help to shape the future of Scottish sport, particularly in relation to opportunities, support, and partnerships for SGBs and the future strategy for the SSA. This is a great opportunity for someone with a passion for sport and presents great potential for the development of new/existing skills, meeting new people and new networks and making a genuine difference to sport and SGBs in Scotland.

Time Commitment: Approximately 5 hours per month. All posts are non-remunerated although travel and meeting expenses will be reimbursed according to the SSA’s policies and procedures.


  • The post(s) will be responsible to the membership, via the Board of Management and directly through the Chairperson of the Scottish Sports Association.
  • The post(s) will provide guidance to the Board of Management utilising their knowledge and expertise.

Main Duties

1.            Attend SSA Board meetings and AGM/EGMs, providing reports as necessary

2.            Keep up to date with, and advise the Board and staff of any relevant developments

3.            Act as an advocate for the role of sport and SGBs

4.            Advise and support the Board/staff in relation to opportunities, support for the SSA and for SGBs

5.            Represent the SSA as required at meetings, conferences etc

6.            Any other related duties as deemed necessary from time to time.
