Scottish Gymnastics - Consultant Physical Preparation Coach (Contract for Services)

Scottish Gymnastics are seeking to engage with a physical preparation expert to support gymnasts and coaches in our performance pathway across our Olympic and Non-Olympic disciplines.

As part of the Scottish Gymnastics 12-year strategy, we are aspiring within our performance pathway to ‘expand the talent pool and develop Scottish gymnast to British and World performance levels’. By attracting this level of expertise in physical preparation we will help raise performance standards in the sport as well as strengthen the development pathways to ensure a strong sporting legacy.

This position is a contract for service which will deliver interventions and support to our performance programmes. In the role they will work closely with Scottish Gymnastics Performance Managers, the National Technical Advisors, other support services and personal coaches.

Job Title: Physical Preparation Coach
Fee Rate: Scotland Delivery: Circa. £200 per day includes all expenses
UK & International Delivery: Circa. £150 per day + travel & subsistence
Sessional 1:1 intervention rate: to be negotiated
Hours of Work: Such hours as necessary to carry out your duties as agreed with SG Performance Managers.  This will include working outside normal office hours at evenings and weekends and on Public Holidays. For a detailed outline of camps for 2018-19 please see Appendix.1
Location: Camps will be predominantly delivered within Scotland. There will be some other UK and oversees camps.

Long Term Outcomes

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a holistic approach, working collaboratively with Technical Advisors/Leads, Physiotherapy, Medical & Nutrition as well as personal coaches and gymnasts. Delivering physical preparation that enhances the Scottish pathway, working towards developing a world class system as part of the Scottish Gymnastics long term strategy.

  • Support the development of a pathway that expands the talent pool and develops Scottish gymnasts to British and World performance levels.

Outcomes for 2018-19

  • Coaches will have a better understanding of physical preparation and athlete growth & maturation by coaches involved in SG Performance & Pathways programmes

  • Coaches supported in delivery and integrating physical preparation into club training environment

  • Better prepared and more physical robust gymnasts across Olympic & Non-Olympic disciplines

Main Areas of Responsibility

  • Provide leadership for the delivery and development of strength and conditioning services

  • Deliver physical preparation support for gymnasts and coaches at identified Scottish Gymnastics performance pathway camps and clinics

  • Provide educational support / mentoring to the personal coaches who are part Scottish Gymnastics programmes

  • Support the physical preparation testing, assessment and monitoring of identified gymnasts in the identified Scottish Gymnastics performance and pathway programmes.  

  • Capture, analyse and prepare data relating to gymnasts using a variety of methods including video and statistical analysis

  • Provide individualised support to gymnasts and their personal coaches, on S&C programme design and monitoring as agreed with Performance Managers

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver the services to athletes and coaches

  • In partnership with the identified physiotherapist, work with personal coaches to construct prehabilitation and rehabilitation programmes for identified gymnasts in the MAG and WAG National Performance Programme and liaise with the Performance Manager to monitor adherence

  • Attend, contribute to, and /or provide regular reports at appropriate meetings associated with the programme and support

The person should have:

  • A qualification at degree level (or equivalent) in sports science or related area specialising in the area of physical preparation of performance athletes

  • UK Strength and Conditioning Association ASCC

  • Extensive demonstrable experience in the provision of strength and conditioning support to athletes and coaches to improve performance. This experience should include extensive work with national teams and their athletes

  • Demonstrated ability to analyse and monitor a range of sports in relation to their strength and conditioning needs. To develop, implement and evaluate strength and conditioning programmes.

  • An understanding of the needs of elite athletes and coaches in a high performance environment

  • Knowledge and experience of working with young developing athletes

  • Proven ability to construct individualised training schedules specific to the needs of gymnasts across disciplines
