Netball Scotland - Chair

Netball Scotland are looking for a Chair to join the organisation.

The Chair is pivotal to creating the conditions for overall Board and individual director effectiveness and ensuring that the strategic direction of the organisation is led by the Board. Netball Scotland is a successfully growing Scottish Sports Governing Body and the Chair’s role will be crucial to ensure that our current positive trajectory, towards further growth and development, continues and is aligned with our strong governance practices whilst ensuring the financial stability of our organisation.

The successful individual will be leading, driving and supporting a dynamic Board at a very exciting time of our development and continued growth. As Chair, you will help to shape the future of netball as an integral part of Scottish sport. This is a great opportunity for someone with a passion for sport and presents great potential for the development of new and existing skills, meeting new people and creating different networks whilst making a genuine difference for our sport of Netball. This is a particularly exciting time for netball in Scotland. Our national team are currently 10th in the World Rankings and we have a new semi-professional franchise team, the Sirens, in the Superleague. In addition, we look forward to the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in 2018, and the Netball World Cup in 2019, which will present opportunities for us to further succeed in the world arena.

Time Commitment:

There are usually seven Board meetings in a calendar year i.e. January, February, April, June, August, October and December. The AGM is in September. The Chair’s commitment is approx. 8-12 hours per month but this can vary depending on time of year/netball season/events. Board meetings are held at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow, normally between 6pm and 8pm on Tuesday evenings.


The post is voluntary and therefore non-remunerated, although reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed according to Netball Scotland’s policies and procedures.

Accountability: The Board

Main Duties:

  • Chair Board meetings
  • Lead and manage the Board
  • Maintain knowledge of the organisation and personal commitment to its goals and objectives
  • Ensure all Board members receive accurate, timely and clear information to support informed decision making
  • Ensure effective board communications with the membership and employees
  • Work with the CEO and Board Directors to ensure that appropriate reports are made available to the Board on a timely basis
  • Advise, support and regularly review Governance matters arising within the organisation
  • Line manage and liaise regularly with the CEO to review their performance utilising a systematic and regular process
  • Be an ambassador and represent Netball Scotland to stakeholders and partners

The ideal candidates should have:

  • Relevant experience as a Director, Trustee or Committee Member in either commercial, voluntary or public sector contexts.
  • Knowledge of legislation and requirements relating to governance
  • Strategic perspective, vision and ability to work positively within a team
  • An established reputation as a leader and strategic thinker in either commercial, voluntary or public sector contexts
  • Strong intellect and analytical ability: and able to focus on the relevant issues
  • Be able to liaise with the CEO regularly in order to gain an insight into the organisation’s work and to provide regular updates to the Board meetings
  • Ability to support, challenge and manage a relationship with the CEO and other Board Directors
  • Excellent communication skills and experience of public speaking

Terms and Conditions:

As stated in Netball Scotland’s Articles of Association, the Netball Scotland Chair will normally be elected onto the Netball Scotland Board at the Annual General Meeting for a two year term.
The Chair is eligible to serve for a maximum of three terms i.e. six years in total.
